Dr. Shemika Brooks (she/her/hers) is a Licensed Psychologist and a Certified Group Psychotherapist (CGP) based in the state of Maryland.
As a highly-educated, cis, able-bodied, US native, English-speaking, African-American, Black woman (and more!), Dr. Brooks understands the impact of various identities and their intersectionality on lived experiences. Dr. Brooks is dedicated to providing culturally sensitive, trauma-informed, integrative care for BIPOCs and individuals holding all identities, as well as aiding professionals and organizations in developing anti-racist, social justice-oriented, equitable practices. Dr. Brooks takes an integrated approach to her therapeutic and consultative work. At the foundation of her practice is psychodynamic theory serving as a cornerstone for conceptualization; with multi-cultural, feminist, and systems lenses informing direction; and other techniques integrated to meet individual and system needs.
Dr. Brooks provides individual, group, family, and couple’s/partners’ therapy services as well as consultation services and presentations. She has engaged in clinical work in a variety of settings, including college/university counseling centers and community agencies serving adults, children and adolescents, couples, and families. Dr. Brooks is a strong proponent of group psychotherapy as an effective and transformative means of addressing individual and interpersonal concerns, and of maintaining wholistic mental health and healthy relationships. She also believes that, for professionals and agencies, professional development process groups can play a key role in identifying and working through various interpersonal and team dynamics.
Dr. Brooks is a PROUD ALUMNA of Spelman College (C’ 2010; B.A. in Psychology and Philosophy); as well as a graduate of the Mental Health Counseling and Behavioral Medicine M.A. Program at Boston University School of Medicine, and the Clinical Psychology Psy.D. Program at the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey.
Outside of work, Shemika enjoys crocheting; spending time with family members and friends (especially babies!); and fellowship with her personal, professional, and spiritual networks.
